Parking garage vandalism under investigation as hate crime

PALO ALTO — Graffiti vandalism found this week in a bathroom in a downtown parking garage is being investigated as a hate crime, authorities said.

In a statement Friday night, police said dispatchers took a call from a city employee at 8:54 a.m. Thursday about the graffiti found in a ground-floor public restroom in the garage in the 400 block of Bryant Street.

When officers came to the garage, they found a series of insulting statements written in black marker against people from India.

Public works officials removed the graffiti, which had been placed some time after the last staff check of the bathroom around noon on Wednesday. Police say no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.

City officials and police have had to respond to multiple episodes of graffiti in other locations in recent years, including at a church office last October, a park playground last June, and two high school restrooms last May.

Separate incidents of vandalism included a Black Lives Matter flag and a Ukrainian flag at residents’ homes last April, as well as three episodes in a public park in mid-2021.
