Stanford-UCLA starts Cardinal’s huge week

The eyes of the women’s basketball world will be on Stanford Monday night when the No. 3 Cardinal hosts UCLA on ESPN2.

It’s senior night for Haley Jones, the program’s star player who was the standout player in the Final Four two years ago when Stanford won the national championship. The Mitty grad is expected to be a first round pick in the WNBA Draft and will be attended by dozens of family and friends.

However, it probably won’t be the last games at Maples Pavilion for Jones and her fellow seniors Francesca Belibi, Ashten Prechel and Hannah Jump. Stanford should host games in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, barring a huge collapse here late.

The final schedule for the Cardinal should be challenging. Three ranked opponents are on the roster this week (in addition to UCLA, Stanford will play at No. 21 Colorado on Friday and No. 8 Utah on Sunday).

Then there’s the Pac-12 Tournament and finally the NCAA Tournament – including the last games at Maples for the senior class that helped Stanford get back to the mountain top.
