After losing the race for San Jose mayor last fall and facing term limits next year, the Santa Clara County supervisor is reportedly a front-runner for San Diego county executive, a job that would double her salary.

According to the U.S. Census, the largest of any county in the state, the population of the rural county in northeastern California will drop 6% between 2021 and 2022 due to young people leaving, prison closures and the death of old people.

Public schools

Statewide, enrollment in K-12 is down 40,000 students this year, raising the risk of teacher layoffs and school closures. But that’s less than the drop of 110,000 students in 2021 and 160,000 in 2020, as COVID raged.
