How Dungeons & Dragons’ new release date could affect box office
While a slight delay in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ release may be a disappointment to some, it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Contrary to previous points in development, where the film was originally slated for a July 2021 release, the new four-week date shift isn’t nearly as outrageous as the previous four-month, six-month, and nearly full-year delays. Since the film appears to be mostly complete, it doesn’t seem likely that Paramount would want to hold onto this Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves too long, especially given the rave reception from the public for the trailer shown at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
What will be interesting to see is how Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ new release date may affect box office potential. Previously, the film’s reboot was expected to be its only release over the weekend of March 3, until MGM pushed for it last July. Creed III, directed by star Michael B. Jordan, on the same date. Although the Beliefs and rocky franchises should not have the same box office weight as a blockbuster project on the scale of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesrecent boxing movies have proven to be solid hits, with Creed II grossed over $214 million, a strong improvement over its predecessor’s $170 million.
On the new date, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves appears to have minimal competition at the box office with the March 2023 release date, featuring the indie boxing movie lion heart and crime drama A thousand and one. The week before, however, is the release of John Wick: Chapter 4 while Shazam! Anger of the Gods will be in its third week of release, raising the possibility of a heated battle between the three films. Only time will tell when Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comes on March 31.
