Sig-alert lifted, I-880 lanes reopen after fatal collision

FREMONT — A motorcyclist died Sunday after an apparent collision with a vehicle blocking Interstate 880 lanes, authorities said.

Shortly before 6:20 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to northbound I-880 lanes south of Automall Parkway for a report of a possible vehicular collision, CHP officer James Evans said.

When CHP officers arrived, they found a motorcyclist lying on the left lane of the roadway with serious injuries.

Fremont Fire Department firefighters also arrived at the scene and provided emergency life-saving measures, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Their identities were not available, pending notification of the next of kin from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s office.

There were no other reported injuries, Evans said.

CHP officers issued a Sig alert at 8:39 p.m. closing the two leftmost lanes of the roadway with no estimated time of reopening and advising drivers and residents to avoid the area. All lanes reopened just before 9 p.m

The CHP will investigate the collision and anyone with information for investigators can call the CHP’s Hayward office at 510-489-1500.
