A new report reveals that Dwayne Johnson had to go above the DC Films boss for the big cameo in Black Adam, which hits theaters this week.
WARNING: This article contains IMPORTANT spoilers for Black Adam.According to a new report, Dwayne Johnson reportedly had to go above the DC Films boss for a major Black Adam cameo. After years of being stuck in development hell, Johnson’s Black Adam movie finally hits theaters this week, bringing the iconic character to the DCEU. Johnson was cast as the titular character nearly a decade ago and would initially appear in the Shazam! movie with Zachary Levi until he joins Warner Bros. convinced to let the two characters have their own origin stories before clashing.
Black Adam will investigate the grim origin story of Teth-Adam as a Kahndaq slave who one day gains divine powers and becomes one of the most powerful creatures on Earth. However, he is not the first to appear on screen as Superman has been part of the DCEU ever since Man of Steel launched the franchise in 2013, starring Henry Cavill as Superman. Of Black Adam Johnson will be released later this week and has commented on Superman’s DCEU absence and how he has plans for him and Black Adam in the future. The news that Black AdamThe recently leaked post-credits scene has fans excited for Superman’s imminent return.
The Black Adam Superman credits scene has sparked excitement, but Johnson had to pull some key strings to make it happen. According to a new piece by The Hollywood ReporterCavill’s Superman wasn’t supposed to be in at first Black Adam, and it wasn’t until reshoots happened earlier this year that the idea came up. According to commerce, DC Films boss Walter Hamada, who was set to leave the position this week, had rejected the idea and opted to focus on Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Superman reboot movie. Because of Hamada’s rejection, Johnson went around and turned directly to the current heads of Warner Bros. Pictures, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who supported Superman appearing in Black Adam. A “furious round of negotiations” supposedly took place before Labor Day, and the scene was filmed in mid-September.
The Rock’s dedication to Superman wasn’t just for show
Although Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films have not yet commented on this story, if this is what happened, it shows that Johnson’s dedication to Superman was genuine. The last time Cavill’s Superman was on screen was at Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, but that film is set in a separate continuity and is not canon for the DCEU. As for recent DCEU movies, Cavill’s Superman has not been part of the franchise since 2017. The character has made cameos in Shazam! and peacekeeper, but did not have the British star portraying him. With Johnson pushing his limits, it proves he’s not shying away from his hopes and plans to do projects involving Cavill’s Superman.
Of Black Adam due out in theaters around the world later this week, only time will tell how long it will be before Cavill fits back into the DCEU as Superman after the post-credits scene. With Cavill returning to the DCEU on a supposedly regular basis, that bodes well for a potential Man of Steel 2 and other DC projects featuring the iconic hero. It will also be interesting to see what role Johnson can play in Cavill’s Superman appearances, whether he be an advisor or an executive producer for future films, especially after Black Adam is from.
